More Pain for Newspapers?

by Dave on November 11, 2008

Call me a Luddite, but I loved reading my morning newspaper. It was a morning habit – a retreat from the laptop. But I canceled the delivery of all but the Sunday edition yesterday.

Last week The Philadelphia Inquirer was late most days. Cutbacks in delivery service have killed reliability, and my ability to read it. If I can’t get at it during breakfast, it just doesn’t get read. Add up the dead trees, needless expense, and the fact that I get most of my important news online, a subscription just didn’t make sense anymore.

Newspapers are already battered by dwindling subscriber base. Will the availability of alternatives coupled with a severe economic downturn spell the end for newspapers as we know them?
